Natural gas has several qualities which makes it be a preferred economic energy source. However, the production of and usage of natural gas has environmental issues which should be taken into consideration. The burning of natural gas has emissions of air pollutants like carbon dioxide. The documentary gasland is a film which was created and explains how natural gas drilling also known as fracturing has been known to cause-effect on the environment in several ways. In this article, we take you through some of the effects of natural gas fracturing.
Cause of global warming
Global warming is the increase of temperatures on the surface of the earth. The temperatures affect both land and water. The temperature rise affects both the living on land and in water and cause effects on their survival. The fracturing of natural gas is one cause of the global warming effects. The emissions given out when the gas is being burnt are absorbed into the air and then later will interfere with it hence causing global warming.
Gas fracturing causes air pollution
When natural gas is burnt, it produces amounts mercury, sulfur and particulates. These emissions are not good for the environment and particularly the air around. When the air is polluted, it will affect various animals and plants that are within the particular environment. When the air is polluted even plants in such an environment will not grow and yield produce as expected. Air pollution in humans will end up causing bronchitis, asthma, heart disease and also lung cancer.
Effects on land use and wildlife
The drilling and fracturing of natural gas have also been known to affect wildlife and also land use. The natural gas fracturing has also affected the ecosystem because it has caused the fragmentation of wildlife and also erosion. Natural gas drilling has also led to change in wildlife migration patterns and also affected their habitats. For instance, in a case where tunnels are built to put the gas pipes, the construction could lead to erosion and also destroying of animals habitats. Even streams get affected after the pollutants are directed to rivers in the process.
Effects on water use and pollution
The drilling of natural gas may cause risks to the people living near the construction area. This is because the chemicals used in the drilling water are hazardous hence will contaminate water. On the other hand, the radioactive materials may leak to the water sources thus will affect the water used by animals and human beings in such an area.…Continue Reading
